The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

If the error message “Update/Edit link failed” appears when updating or editing a link using QuickSwitch, the problem may be caused by attempting to move a graphic to a different location in the graphics application. Word version 4.00 tries to copy the graphic from its old location in the file it was copied from, and returns the error message when it cannot find it.

If the graphic must be repositioned, the link must be re-created in Word. To reposition the graphic use the following steps:

  1. Reposition the graphic in the graphics application and select it.
  2. Choose Copy from the Edit menu.
  3. In Word, select the old identifier paragraph and graphic, and choose Paste Link from the Edit menu.

Word overwrites the original graphic and link information with the updated graphic and proper coordinates; when using a graphics application other than SuperPaint, the identifier paragraph must be retyped and then Update Link or Edit Link will work until the graphic is repositioned again.
