SUMMARY

Appendix F of the Microsoft Word version 5.00 “Reference to Microsoft Word” manual states that the maximum number of characters per line is 255.

However, the number of characters per line depends on certain parameters such as page width, the use of landscape or portrait mode, and the font size of the characters being used.

For example, using the PostScript printer driver, POSTSCRP.PRD, with characters formatted for Helvetica 2 on a 22-inch-wide page with 0-inch right and left margins, the maximum number of characters that fit on a line is 1021.
