Excel: Filling Formulas and Values Up or to the Left

SUMMARY

To fill an existing formula or value up or to the left in versions of Microsoft Excel prior to version 2.20, do the following:

  1. Select the cell containing the formula (or value) to be filled and drag to the top or left to select the desired range.
  2. Click in the formula bar.
  3. Hold down the OPTION key and press ENTER or RETURN to enter the formula from the active formula bar into the selected range.

In Excel version 2.20 or 3.00, to fill a formula or value up or to the left, you can use the above method or do the following:

  1. Select the cell containing the formula (or value) to be filled and drag to the top or left to select the desired range.
  2. Hold down the SHIFT key and choose either Fill Up or Fill Left from the Edit menu as appropriate for the selected range.

Note: The procedure for version 1.50 and earlier is also available in Excel versions 2.20 and 3.00.
