SUMMARY

In the Microsoft Works Word Processor module, the Correct Spelling command (on the Spell menu) stops at the first word of every line in the document if the previous line ends with a line break.

Under Options in the Spell menu, one default option is Must Capitalize After Period. When the Must Capitalize After Period option is selected, the spelling checker stops at words following line breaks and suggests a word, with the first letter being capitalized, for a replacement. This happens when spell checking a file that has been saved as Text With Line Breaks. This problem occurs with most files downloaded from host computers because they often require the use of breaks at the end of each line.

To avoid this problem, choose Options from the Spell menu and deselect the Must Capitalize After Period option.

MORE INFORMATION

If deselecting the Must Capitalize After Period option is unacceptable, you can find and remove all line breaks at the end of lines and then correct spelling, as follows:

  1. From the Search menu, choose Replace.
  2. In the Find What box, select the Paragraph symbol twice.
  3. In the Replace With box, type in “@@@” (without quotation marks).
  4. Click the Replace All button. Click OK when all occurrences have been replaced.
  5. From the Search menu, choose Replace. In the Find What box, select the Paragraph symbol.
  6. In the Replace With box, press the SPACEBAR once.
  7. Click the Replace All button. Click OK when all occurrences have been replaced.
  8. From the Search menu, choose Replace. In the Find What box, type “@@@” (without quotation marks).
  9. In the Replace With box, select the Paragraph symbol twice.
  10. Click the Replace All button.

After following these steps, each line in your document will end with a blank space rather than a line break. The last line of paragraphs and the line between paragraphs will end with line breaks. You can now choose Correct Spelling without having to deselect the Must Capitalize After Period option.
