SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word for DOS, if you use a print merge field name that begins with the word “next,” Word treats the field as though the NEXT instruction is being used and skips to the next record in the data document. For example, the following field name would cause the problem:

<<next_payment>>

A similar problem occurs if you use the word “next” in a variable name with the ASK instruction. Word prompts for the date in the following example, but it is not printed:

<<ASK nextdate=?Enter the date>>

To work around these problems, change the field name or variable name to one NOT beginning with the word “next.”

Microsoft has confirmed these problems in Word versions 3.x, 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5. We are researching these problems and will post new information here as it becomes available.
