The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.x, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1

Summary:

When Microsoft Word for the Macintosh documents are opened in Aldus PageMaker for the Macintosh version 3.0, an error message stating that the Word document cannot be opened due to a “conflicting style name” sometimes occurs.

According to Aldus, the conflicting styles problem occurs because of a corrupted “PageMaker Defaults” file in the System Folder. Aldus recommends that you drag the “PageMaker Defaults” file to the Trash and initialize your styles.

To initialize your styles in PageMaker, do the following:

  1. From the Type menu, choose Define Styles.
  2. Select a style from the Style box in the Define styles dialog box and choose the Edit button.
  3. Choose the OK button in the Edit style dialog box.
  4. Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 for each style, then choose the OK button in the Define Styles dialog box.
