To change the footnote separator in Microsoft Word for Windows, follow the steps below:

Word for Windows version 2.0

  1. From the Insert menu, select Footnote.
  2. Choose the Options button and choose the Separator button.

This opens a pane of the current window that allows the editing of the current footnote separator. The default footnote separator is a special character containing a 2-inch line.

To change the footnote-continuation separator, follow these steps:

  1. From the Insert menu, select Footnote.
  2. Choose the Options button and the Cont. Separator button.

This opens a pane of the current window that allows the editing of the current continuation separator. The default continuation separator is a special character containing a 6-inch line.

Word for Window 1.x

  1. From the Insert menu, select Footnote.
  2. Choose the Separator button.

This opens a pane of the current window that allows the editing of the current footnote separator. The default footnote separator is a special character containing a 2-inch line.
