If you create a table by choosing the Insert Table command from the Document menu in Word, the default indents for the paragraphs in each cell will be based upon the indents of the paragraph where the insertion point was located when the table was created.
Therefore, if you have a large right indent, the right-indent marker can actually be moved off to the left of the left-indent marker in a cell once the table is created. In this situation, if you enter text in a cell, Word will allow only one character per line.
Similarly, if you have a large left indent, the left-indent marker can actually be moved off to the right of the right-indent marker in a cell once the table is created. In this situation, if you enter text in a cell, the cell appears to expand and no characters are printed in the cell.
For example, you may have a paragraph that has left and first indents at 1 inch, and a right indent at the 4-inch mark on the ruler. If you create a two-column table of default width (3-inch columns for 1.25-inch left and right margins), the right indent in the resulting cells will be .25 inch to the left of the left and first indents.
To check and correct this situation, select an area in the table that has the problem. Then from the Format menu, choose Paragraph. In the Paragraph box, set the First, Left, and Right Indentations to 0 (zero), and then click OK. You can also adjust the indents by moving the indent triangles on the ruler.
