SUMMARY

The Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series II uses a variety of fonts to print a typical document. When you format characters with specific print characteristics in Word, the printer selects from among the fonts in its memory (residing internally, on an insertable cartridge, or downloaded from a disk) and responds by using font-selection escape sequences.

Many characteristics are used to identify a font. The printer maintains an internal table that contains the values of all the currently specified characteristics. Whenever you modify the default character formatting and send the text to the printer with the Print Printer command, the printer records the modified characteristics in the table, and prints out the font that corresponds to the recorded characteristics.

MORE INFORMATION

The printer selects a font by performing a priority sort of the characteristics currently in the table. The characteristics and their relative priority are shown in the following example:

Characteristic Priority Example ————– ——– ——-

Orientation Highest Portrait Symbol Set | HP Roman-8 Spacing | Fixed Pitch | 10 Height | 12 point Style | Upright Stroke Weight | Bold Typeface Lowest Courier

When selecting a font, the printer compares the highest priority characteristic in the table to the corresponding characteristic of the fonts available to the printer. If only one matching font is available, that font is selected.

However, when several fonts match, the printer compares the next-highest priority characteristic to the corresponding characteristic of the available fonts, and so on, down the list. When only one font remains, that font is selected. If more than one font remains after comparing all characteristics, selection is determined by the priority of the font location.

The priorities of the font locations are as follows:

  1. Soft Font (Lowest)
  2. Cartridge Font (All cartridges have same priority)
  3. Internal Font (Highest)
