To obtain a word count, from the Tools menu choose Word Count. The number of words counted will display on the left side of the message bar. To get the number of lines in a Word 5.50 document, from the File menu, choose Print, select File in the To option box, and type in the filename “NUL” (without the quotation marks). This method will return the number of lines and words within the document without printing the document or creating a print file.

To obtain the word count, from the Utilities menu, choose Word Count. The number of words counted will appear in the lower-left corner of the screen. To get the number of lines in a Word 5.50 document, from the File menu, choose Print, select File in the To option box, and type in the filename “NUL” (without the quotation marks). This method will return the number of lines and words within the document without printing the document or creating a print file.

To obtain the word and line count in a document, choose Print File, and type “NUL” (without the quotation marks) in the “name:” field. DOS will discard all characters sent to the print file because NUL is a DOS reserved word. Consequently, no space is used up on the disk.
Note: Creating a print file named NUL can be performed only under DOS or in the OS/2 3.x compatibility box. If Word 5.00 is being run in an OS/2 screen group, you must use a valid filename for the print file.
Word Version 4.00
To obtain the word and line count in a document, choose Print Repaginate (provided that some edits have been made since the last repagination). The insertion or deletion of a single character or space is enough to invoke the line and word count upon repagination.
