COBOL 3.0 SETUP Hangs on IBM 3270 PC, Compiler Works Properly

PSS ID Number: Q35518 Article last modified on 04-21-1993

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft COBOL for MS-DOS and OS/2, version 3.0

Summary: The IBM 3270 PC combines an IBM PC with the capability to interface with a mainframe computer. Although Page 1-3 of the “Microsoft COBOL Version 3.0 Operator’s Guide” states that the COBOL software will run on the IBM 3270 PC, the SETUP program does not work with the 3270; the operating system hangs shortly after giving the SETUP command. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Version 3.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information as it becomes available. To work around the problem, perform the SETUP on another computer and choose the Review SETUP option. SETUP will list all the files that need to be copied from each disk. You then can copy the appropriate files to the IBM 3270 PC. Note that Microsoft COBOL versions prior to 3.0 do not use a SETUP utility.
