IBM ROM Diagnostic and Power-On-Self-Test (POST) Errors

Most computers run diagnostics when first turned on. These diagnostics are commonly referred to as the POST (Power-On Self Test). If an error is found in the system, an error code is returned by the POST. These errors are often accompanied by an unpleasant beep and are most common after changing the hardware. The following information is a guide to the most common error codes.


Error Code    Meaning

 1XX           System Board Error

 20X           Memory Error

 30X           Keyboard Error

 4XX           IBM: Monochrome Display Adapter Error
               Compaq: Parallel Printer Error

 5XX           Color Display Adapter Error

 6XX           Floppy Disk Controller Error

 90X           IBM: Parallel Printer Adapter Error
               Compaq: Not used

110X           Serial Port Error

130X           IBM: Parallel Printer Error
               Compaq: Not used

170X           Hard Disk Controller Error
