OL98: Mapisp32.exe Stops Responding in Mapi32.dll Because of a Race Condition and Multi-Threaded Notification

The Outlook 98 client may stop responding when the spooler is downloading a message with the following stack trace:

ScSendOutgoingMessage() line 400
ScProcessGlobalOutgoingQue() line 2268 + 13 bytes
FSplHeartbeatProcessing() line 1002
SpoolerMsgPump() line 1200
ScSplEntry() line 554
ScTransitionToMapiDLL() line 176 + 18 bytes
WinMain() line 361 + 16 bytes
SpoolerMain() line 458 + 50 bytes
KERNEL32! GetProcessPriorityBoost + 279 bytes


A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
