SYMPTOMS
When you click the Start button and then open a menu that contains a shortcut to a file on a network share, there may be a delay. This behavior typically occurs in the following situation:
- Configure a computer running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Windows 95 with Active Desktop to use roaming profiles on a Microsoft Windows NT domain.
- Add a folder to the Start menu. In this folder, add a shortcut to a file that points to a network share (usually, your home folder).
- When you open the Start menu and open the folder, a network access occurs when the icon for the shortcut is displayed.
This does not usually happen with Windows 95 unless you install Active Desktop. It happens only the first time you display the icon in Windows 95 without Active Desktop.
CAUSE
The Active Desktop Shell32.dll dynamic-link library (DLL) determines if the program icon is on a remote drive. If it is, it spawns a new thread and calls WNetGetResourceInformation to check if the remote drive exists. Because this happens for each link, the process may take a long time (depending on the number of links and the network bandwidth).
