SYMPTOMS

Duplicate copies of recoverable Message Queuing (MSMQ) messages may be delivered to the receiving computer.

CAUSE

A bug in the MSMQ Queue Manager causes the Queue Manager to sometimes fail to acknowledge the receipt of a message. The sending computer considers the message to be unreceived, and resends the message.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

The normal duplicate message removal system in MSMQ handles most of these duplicate messages, but if the duplicate message is delivered after the receiving computer has cleared its duplicate message tracking cache (due to the normal cleanup time-out or a system restart), a duplicate delivery may result.
