Windows Utilities Removed During Windows 2000 Upgrade

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 2000 from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, some Microsoft Windows utilities or accessories that you copied or moved to a Desktop folder may not be available.

CAUSE

During the upgrade process, some utilities or accessories that are written specifically for Windows 95 or Windows 98 may be removed from the computer depending on whether or not the actual file (or a shortcut to the file) is located in the Desktop folder.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

There are several conditions under which the utilities are not migrated:

The following files are not migrated to the Windows 2000 installation if the program is located in the Desktop folder:
- Calc
- Explorer
- Notepad
- Packager
- Pbrush
- Regedit
- Sndrec32.exe
- Sndvol32.exe
- Winfile
- Winhelp
NOTE: The above files are migrated if a shortcut to the program is located in the Desktop folder.
The following five file are not migrated during the upgrade process regardless of whether or not the actual file, or a shortcut to the file, is located in the Desktop folder:
- Accstat
- Defrag
- Scandskw
- Welcome
- Winpopup
An exception to the above conditions is the Winhlp32.exe file. This file is migrated whether the file (or a shortcut to the file) is located in the Desktop folder.
