Cannot Install SimCity 3000 Building Architect Tools and 1.1 Patch in Windows 2000

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

When you download and then run the SimCity 3000 Building Architect Tools and the version 1.1 patch compressed self-extracting file, you receive the following error message after Setup starts:

You either don't have DirectX installed, or you have an unrecognizable version. You will need to install DirectX 6.0 in order to use the SimCity 3000 Building Architect.

Whether you click Yes or No, Setup seems to continue normally, and shortcuts are placed on the Start menu. When you click one of the shortcuts, you receive a "missing shortcut" error message. If you check the hard disk, you may notice that no files were copied to the SimCity program folder.

This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 includes DirectX version 7, and the SimCity 3000 Building Architect Setup does not recognize it as a valid DirectX version.

To work around this behavior, use any unzipping tool (such as WinZip) to extract the files from the compressed file manually. Then, run the extracted Setup.exe file.
