What Are Some Specific Error Messages I May Get?

Out of stack space.


The page borders of section n are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in WINWORD.EXE at <address>.

One or more margins are set outside the printable area of the page. Choose the Fix button to increase the appropriate margins.

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in GDI.EXE at <address>.

No printers are installed. To install a printer, point to Settings on the Windows Start menu, click Printers, and then double-click Add Printer. Follow the instructions in the wizard.

One or more of the following:


Word flashes the Printing dialog box.


-or-

Printer Driver Busy

Another software application is using the printer. Cancel printing and wait until the other software program has finished. Try printing again.


-or-

Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup. Try one or more of the following:

-or-

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in UNKNOWN at <address>.

The margins of section <n> are set outside the printable area of the page.

There is a Printer Error.

Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup.

Word cannot bring up the properties dialog box because the printer returned an error.

Cannot print because there is no default printer selected. Please select a printer.

This is not a valid print range.

Word cannot read the header or footer in this document. Save the document in Rich Text Format, close it, and then reopen it.

Word cannot print. There is no printer installed.

Specific Error Messages When Printing

The following are some error messages you may receive when you attempt to print from Microsoft Word. Please see the referenced articles to resolve printing problems related to these specific error messages and situations.



When you try to print multiple pages per sheet, or when you click Print Preview on the File menu, the following error message may appear:

Out of stack space.

When you print your Word document that contains a page border, the following error message may appear:

When you attempt to print a Word document that contains a table with numbering formatted as Hidden, Word may stop responding (hang), or the following error message may appear:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:


WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in WINWORD.EXE at 0167:30268ae7.

An error message caused by one of the following:




  • If you set your document margins closer to the edge of the paper than your printer is capable of printing, the following warning message appears for each copy you send to the printer:

    One or more margins are set outside the printable area of the page. Choose the Fix button to increase the appropriate margins.

  • When you print or view a document in print preview, page borders in your document may not be printed or may not appear, or the following error message may appear:

When you open, print, or repaginate a document or you scroll through a document using the Microsoft IntelliMouse wheel, the following error message appears:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:

When you try to print, the following error message may appear:

No printers are installed. To install a printer, point to Settings on the Windows Start menu, click Printers, and then double-click Add Printer. Follow the instructions in the wizard.

When you cancel printing to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet 820CXi printer in Microsoft Word and then try to print again, the following symptom or error messages may occur:

Word flashes the Printing dialog box.

-or-

Printer Driver Busy

Another software application is using the printer.

Cancel printing and wait until the other software program has finished. Try printing again.

-or-

Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup. Try one or more of the following:

  • Check the printer by printing a test page from Windows.
  • Make sure the printer is turned on and online.
  • Reinstall the printer driver.

-or-

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:


WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in UNKNOWN at 014f:30080f6c.

When you print your document, one of the following error messages may appear:

The margins of section n are set outside the printable area of the page.

The margins of section n are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?

where n is the number of the section that contains the problem.

If you click Yes in the above error messages, your document is printed, but some text may be cut off or truncated. If you click No, the printing of the document is canceled.

If you try to print a selection from a document that contains more than one header or footer, the following error message may appear:

Word cannot read the header or footer in this document. Save the document in Rich Text Format, close it, and then reopen it.
