CG5: Error Message: File Artgal50.mmc Is Broken and Cannot Be Repaired

SYMPTOMS

If you try to start Microsoft Clip Gallery 5.0 on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

File Artgal50.mmc is broken and cannot be repaired. Either delete it or change the file name. For details, push F1 key and look for "Artgal50.mmc is broken" in Clip Gallery Help.

Note If you rebuild the Artgal50.mmc file by following the instructions in Microsoft Clip Gallery 5.0 Help, Clip Gallery still may not start. To view the instructions in Microsoft Clip Gallery 5.0 Help, follow these steps:

  1. In the Insert ClipArt dialog box, click Help.
  2. On the Contents tab, expand Troubleshooting, and then click Artgal50.mmc is corrupt?.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both the following conditions are true:

  • Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000, version 1.0, is installed on the computer.


-and-

  • Microsoft Office 2000 is not installed on the computer.

PhotoDraw 2000 Setup installs a version of the Mcps.dll file that is not compatible with Windows 2000 into the Artgalry folder on the hard disk.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Save the download file to your computer. For example, save the file to your desktop.

    Note The version of the Mcps.dll file that is included in this download is 5.1.0.1221 and is fully compatible with Windows 2000.
  2. Double-click the Mcps.exe file.
  3. Click Yes to the license agreement. If you click No, the updated Mcps.dll file will not be copied to your computer.
  4. When you are prompted to type the location where you want to place the extracted file, click Browse, or type the location to the following folder, and then click OK:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry

    Note The Artgalry folder may be in a different location on your computer.
  5. If you are prompted to overwrite the file, click Yes.
  6. After the updated Mcps.dll file is installed, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start and then click Run.
    2. In the Run dialog box, click Browse and then browse to the location of your Artgalry.exe file.

      Note Artgalry.exe is installed by default to the following location and may be different on your computer:

      C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry

    3. Double-click Artgalry.exe.
    4. Click OK to the following message:

      Clip Gallery is now configured to run on your computer.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
