When you install Windows 2000 Server the first time or you promote a Windows 2000 member server to a domain controller and you click This is the only server in my network in the Configure Your Server Wizard, you may overwrite any existing Internet Protocol (IP) address configurations with a IP address and a subnet mask of

These changes are written to the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, DHCP Scope, DNS Resource Records, WINS records, and other Active Directory services that have pre-configured IP addresses as well.

To resolve this issue, change the IP addresses manually by deleting and configuring each service with a new IP address.

You cannot reset the IP address by running DCPROMO to demote the server. To avoid this issue, run the DCPROMO command line utility, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Any Preferred or Alternate DNS Server or WINS Server addresses designated for that server in TCP/IP Properties remain unchanged.
