Article ID: 252322

Article Last Modified on 9/29/2003

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q252322

NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

SYMPTOMS

When you send or receive e-mail on an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) client, you receive the following error message:

The server could not be found. (Account:<account name>,POP server:'mail',Error Number:0x800ccc0d)

Outlook can send and receive with no problems on the ICS host computer.

CAUSE

If you are using a Microsoft Windows-based computer configured as an ICS client in a small network, and the ICS host computer is connected to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) via a cable modem, Outlook cannot resolve the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) and POP3 names of "mail" from the ICS client.

RESOLUTION

Some cable modem services, such as @home, will not accept the simple name of "mail" for POP and SMTP with an ICS client. The ICS host computer can use "mail," but not the ICS client.

Type the fully-qualified POP and SMTP names in the Servers tab of the Internet E-mail service of each ICS client. For example, type lh1.rdc2.on.wave.home.com instead of "mail" for the POP3 entry on the Servers tab of the Internet E-Mail service. If you are not sure how to access this setting, see the References"section.

To determine the correct name of the mail server, have an e-mail sent from the host and check the header information, for server name in the Received or Message-ID sections.
