SYMPTOMS

Windows 2000 Backup (Ntbackup.exe) may not recognize the Conner CTT8000-A (Qic157.sys) tape drive properly.

Backup may also display two instances of the tape drive when there is only one (displaying both a Travan and a MiniQIC drive). When you try to select either of the listed drives on the Backup or Restore tab, you receive one of the following error messages:

The diskette contains an unrecognized file system, or is unformatted.

-or-

Unable to load tape into the tape drive:
OS Error : 1112(No media in drive.)

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there are two instances of the Conner CTT8000-A tape drive in Device Manager. If this is the case, one of the drives is displayed with a red X, indicating that the drive has been disabled and conflicts with the second instance of the drive.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually remove and uninstall the Conner tape drive that is listed with the red X, and then start Backup again.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
