SYMPTOMS

When you type "http://location in the Address box in Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Access to the resource 'HTTP://Location' has been disallowed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your system has the NoRun policy restriction enabled and you are using Internet Explorer version 5.01 (build 5.00.2919.6307).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, type the Web address without "http://" or ask your system administrator to remove the NoRun policy restriction if permitted.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that you may receive similar error messages when you attempt to gain access to the local drive or a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) server from the Address box in Internet Explorer when the NoRun policy restriction is enabled. This behavior is by design. These error messages include:

Access to the resource 'file://Location' has been disallowed.

Access to the resource 'c:\Location' has been disallowed.

Access to the resource '\\server\share' has been disallowed.
