SYMPTOMS

When you specify a computer name that is already in use on the network in the Home Networking Wizard, the wizard does not warn you that the name is not unique. The same issue exists when you change the computer name on the Identification tab in the Network tool in Control Panel.

When you reboot the computer, you may receive the following error message: The computer name you chose matches the name of a computer on the network. To change the computer name double-click Network in Control Panel, and then click the Identification tab.

RESOLUTION

Make sure that the computer name you specify is unique on the network before you finish the Home Networking Wizard or you close the Network Properties dialog box.
