"An OLE registration error occurred" error message when you open an mail that contains embedded Lotus Notes document links in Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you open an e-mail message that contains embedded Lotus Notes document links on a computer where the Lotus Notes client is not installed, the following error message appears:

An OLE registration error occurred. The program is not correctly installed. Run Setup again for the program.

After you click OK, the e-mail message is not displayed.

CAUSE

When Outlook attempts to locate the OLE server for the embedded documents, the process is unsuccessful because the OLE server is not registered. Outlook then displays the error message. Following the error message Outlook fails to open the message.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

MORE INFORMATION

With this fix, Outlook still reports the OLE error; however, it allows the message to open when you click OK to the error message.
