If you click a hyperlink to a Microsoft Word document from Internet Explorer, the document is opened in Microsoft Word with the name "Document in Microsoft Internet Explorer". Any changes made to the file are saved in the new document "Document in Microsoft Internet Explorer" and not in the original linked file.
To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).
To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, click Save As on the File menu, and save the file using the original file name.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
The new document does not have a .doc extension and does not appear in the Open dialog box (on the File menu) unless you choose to display all files. Click All Files (*.*) in the Files of type box.
