When you click Yes to update the links on a workbook that you are opening, Microsoft Excel appears to stop responding (hang). After a long wait, the links are updated, and you gain control of the worksheet.

The same workbook may have been updated much more quickly in earlier versions of Excel.

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • Your workbook contains a large number of links to one or more Excel workbooks.

  • Many of the linked cells contain formulas that use the VLOOKUP or HLOOKUP functions.

To work around the problem, open the supporting file(s) before you open this workbook.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
