SUMMARY

Internet printing in Windows 2000 is automatically enabled by installing Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

All printers that are shared on a Windows 2000-based server are automatically made accessible by using the Internet Printer Protocol (IPP) printing protocol. Clients that are running Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 and later with IPP printing support can print to the Internet printers. All versions of Windows 2000 have IPP printing support, and it is available as an add-on for Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98 clients. Windows 98/95-based clients can install the internet printing client from the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM by using the following command:

\clients\win9xipp.cli\wpnpins.exe

MORE INFORMATION

Clients can browse Internet printers by selecting the server in the Web browser (for example, http://redwood.corp.microsoft.com/printers or http://redwood/printers).

When you click Connect to connect to the printer, the server automatically creates a .cab file that includes the appropriate driver (if it is installed on the server) and downloads the driver to ensure point-and-print functionality. Otherwise, you are prompted to install the appropriate driver. After connecting, you can monitor and administer the printer from the Web client.

All functionality is controlled through a series of Active Server Page (ASP) scripts. You can see these scripts in the browser's Address window. Each of these ASP scripts and the associated metadata is automatically created each time you start the computer.
