SYMPTOMS

If you open an Excel workbook that contains links to other files, the workbook may seem to start to open and then disappear, or you may receive an error message similar to one of the following, and Microsoft Excel stops responding.

In Microsoft Windows 95/98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.


If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:

EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 0167:300d0819.

When you click Close, Microsoft Excel quits.

In Microsoft Windows 2000

EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the workbook contains external links to more than approximately 1,370 workbooks.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
