When you are using a Microsoft Windows 9.x-based dial-up client and you attempt to connect to a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based remote access server that accepts only Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) authentication, the connection is unsuccessful and you receive the following error message:

Username or password is invalid

This occurs even when you type the correct user name, password, and domain in the appropriate boxes.

The remote access server ignores the information in the Domain box when only PAP authentication is used.

To resolve this issue, type both the domain name and user name in the User Name box in the following format:

domain name\user name
