When you are using a shared Internet connection for a local area network (LAN) on a computer running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and then establish a virtual private network (VPN) connection, the computers that are using the shared connection can no longer connect to the Internet.
When you establish a connection through a VPN, packets are by default routed to the default gateway on the remote network of your VPN connection.
This behavior is by design.
