Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server has added support for the MODE STREAM extension to the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). This support upgrades the performance in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server significantly.
NNTP is a TCP/IP protocol based upon text strings that are sent bidirectionally over 7-bit ASCII TCP channels. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) owns the NNTP protocol, which is specified in Request for Comments (RFC) 977. IETF makes periodic changes by defining extensions to the protocol.
MODE STREAM is a transport extension and is used by a peer to indicate to the server that it wants to suspend the lock step conversational nature of NNTP and send commands in streams.
Two responses are possible for a MODE STREAM command:
203 Streaming is OK
500 Command not understood
