An “em” is a unit of measure equal to the point size of the type in use. An “en” is equal to half of an em. For example, with a 12-point font, an em dash is 12 points long, and an en dash is 6 points long.

To create an em dash, type SHIFT+OPTION+- (minus/hyphen).
