SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Microsoft Works 4.5a, you may receive a warning message stating that Works 4.5a cannot run on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer. If you ignore this warning message, you may receive the following error message:
You may receive this error message even if more than two gigabytes (GB) of hard disk space are available.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
- You attempt to install Works 4.5a on a Windows 2000-based computer.
- More than two GB of space are available on the hard disk.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, install each of the individual components of Works 4.5a separately:
- Insert the Works 4.5a Installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Works Setup from starting automatically.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type msworks.
- In the Look in box, click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, double-click the Msworks folder.
- Double-click the Setup.exe file.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install Works 4.5a.
- In the Msworks folder, double-click the Mswkcal folder.
- Double-click the Setup.exe file.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install Microsoft Works Calendar.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works, version 4.5a for Windows 95.

Microsoft recommends that you run Works 4.5a on a Microsoft Windows 95 or a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer. To run Microsoft Works on a Windows 2000-based computer, Microsoft recommends that you install Microsoft Works 2000.
NOTE: This issue is dependent upon the specific configuration of the computer and its hard disk and, as a result, occurs only occassionally.
