  • Microsoft Works 4.5a

This article was previously published under Q246573

When you attempt to install Microsoft Works 4.5a, you may receive a warning message stating that Works 4.5a cannot run on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer. If you ignore this warning message, you may receive the following error message:

There is not enough disk space for Setup to continue. To exit Setup, click OK, and then free up more disk space. Run Setup again.

You may receive this error message even if more than two gigabytes (GB) of hard disk space are available.

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:

  • You attempt to install Works 4.5a on a Windows 2000-based computer.
  • More than two GB of space are available on the hard disk.

To work around this issue, install each of the individual components of Works 4.5a separately:

  1. Insert the Works 4.5a Installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Works Setup from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  3. In the Named box, type msworks.
  4. In the Look in box, click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Find Now.
  5. In the list of found files, double-click the Msworks folder.
  6. Double-click the Setup.exe file.
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Works 4.5a.
  8. In the Msworks folder, double-click the Mswkcal folder.
  9. Double-click the Setup.exe file.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Microsoft Works Calendar.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works, version 4.5a for Windows 95.

Microsoft recommends that you run Works 4.5a on a Microsoft Windows 95 or a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer. To run Microsoft Works on a Windows 2000-based computer, Microsoft recommends that you install Microsoft Works 2000.

NOTE: This issue is dependent upon the specific configuration of the computer and its hard disk and, as a result, occurs only occassionally.
