SYMPTOMS

When you try to link to a Microsoft Excel chart, the following error message may appear:

Word cannot obtain the data for the Microsoft Excel Chart link.

NOTE: This problem may not appear in other programs, such as Microsoft PowerPoint or WordPad.

This error appears if the path to the chart (including the worksheet name) exceeds 67 characters.

Shorten the name of the file or the worksheet so that the path is no more than 67 characters.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
