Follow the steps in this section to run Microsoft Bookshelf Basics from a network drive or from a local hard disk. Follow the steps in the additional sections to change the shortcuts to point to Microsoft Bookshelf Basics at the new location. These steps assume that you have already installed the Bookshelf Basics component so that you can run Bookshelf Basics from the compact disc.

WARNING: You must copy approximately 275 megabytes (MB) of files to run Microsoft Bookshelf Basics without the compact disc. You must manually remove these files when you remove Microsoft Office.

Copying the Bookshelf Basic Files

To copy the necessary Microsoft Bookshelf Basics files to an alternative drive, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Programs and click Windows Explorer.
  2. Click the compact disc drive in which you have inserted the Microsoft Office compact disc.
  3. Open the <drive>:\Aamsstp folder, where <drive> is the compact disc drive letter.
  4. Click the Aamsstp folder in the left pane to select it.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  6. Open the destination disk to which you want to copy the files.


Note that you must copy these files to the root directory of a hard disk, for example, C:\.

  1. Click the drive letter in the left pane to select it.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  3. After the files have been copied, click the compact disc drive in which the Microsoft Office compact disc has been inserted.
  4. Open the <drive>:\Books folder, where <drive> is the compact disc drive letter.
  5. Click the Books folder in the left pane to select it.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  7. Open the same destination drive used in step 6.
  8. Click the drive letter in the left pane to select it.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  10. Remove the Microsoft Office compact disc from the CD-ROM drive and continue with the steps in the remaining sections.

Changing the Bookshelf Basics Program Shortcut

Edit the path in the Bookshelf Basics shortcut on the Start menu so that it points to the file Bs96se.exe on your destination disk. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Start button and click Explore on the shortcut menu.
  2. Double-click the Programs folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer.
  3. Double-click the Microsoft Reference folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer.
  4. Right-click the Bookshelf Basics shortcut and click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  5. Click the Shortcut tab.
  6. Change the drive letter at the beginning path to the new source drive in the Target box. Do not make any other changes. Click OK.
  7. Remove the Office compact disc from the CD-ROM drive if it is not already removed.
  8. Click the Bookshelf Basics button on the Office Shortcut bar.
  9. If you receive a message prompting you to insert the Bookshelf Basics disc, type the new source drive letter for Bookshelf Basics and click OK.

Bookshelf Basics is configured to run from your new source drive for the Start menu shortcut.

Changing the Bookshelf Basics Button on the Office Shortcut Bar

Edit the path on the Microsoft Bookshelf Basics button on the Office Shortcut Bar so that it points to the file Bs96se.exe on your destination drive. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Bookshelf Basics and click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  2. Click the Shortcut tab.
  3. Change the drive letter at the beginning path to the new source drive in the Target edit box. Do not make any other changes. Click OK.
  4. Remove the Office compact disc from the CD-ROM drive if it is not already removed.
  5. Click the Bookshelf Basics button on the Office Shortcut Bar.
  6. If you receive a message prompting you to insert the Bookshelf Basics disc, type the new source drive letter for Bookshelf Basics and click OK.

Bookshelf Basics is configured to run from your new source drive for your Office Shortcut button.

Using "Look Up Reference" on the Tools Menu of Office Programs

The Microsoft Windows 95 registry must be modified so that Microsoft Bookshelf Basics will be integrated with the Microsoft Office applications. You can click Look Up Reference on the Tools menu in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint to access Bookshelf Basics.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

There are 5 registry values in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ReferenceTitles\BookshelfL subkey that must be changed to point to the new source drive letter for Bookshelf Basics. To change these values, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, click Run, and type REGEDIT. Click OK.
  2. In the Registry window, click the plus sign (+) to the left of the following keys, in order

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
          SOFTWARE
          Microsoft
          ReferenceTitles
                            


    to open the following key:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ReferenceTitles
                            


    Then, click the folder named BookshelfL. The following key appears in the status bar:

          My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ReferenceTitles
          \BookshelfL
                            
  3. Click AppKeyword in the Name column of the right pane.
  4. Click Modify from the Edit menu and change the drive letter at the beginning of Value data to the new source drive letter for Bookshelf Basics. Click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 3 through 4 for the following registry values located in the same subkey:

          AppPath
          AppText
          DefinePath
          CDPath
                            
  6. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
