SYMPTOMS

You cannot open a Microsoft Project 98 file saved in the MPP format in an earlier version of Microsoft Project.

Files created in Microsoft Project 98 and saved in the MPP format cannot be opened in any previous version of Microsoft Project.

WORKAROUND

To open Microsoft Project 98 files in earlier versions of Microsoft Project, save the file in the MPX format.

NOTE: Because some features are not available in earlier versions of Microsoft Project, you may lose the features when you convert the file to MPX format.

To convert your file to MPX format in Microsoft Project 98, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. In the Save As Type list, click MPX 4.0 (*.mpx), type a name for your file and then click Save.

For more information about saving files so that you can open them in earlier versions of Microsoft Project, click the Office Assistant, type saving file for 4.0, click Search, and then click to view Save project data for use in Microsoft Project 4.1 or 4.0.

NOTE: If the Assistant is hidden, click the Office Assistant button on the Standard toolbar. If Microsoft Project Help is not installed on your computer, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
