SYMPTOMS
After you install Membership, the users who are only in the Windows NT directory are no longer able to attach to the server. Therefore they cannot send or receive messages.
CAUSE
Distributed Processing Architecture (DPA) authentication (Membership) breaks Microsoft Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM). Internet Mail Server can only use one directory to authenticate users. If Membership is installed using DPA, then the Windows NT directory of users is no longer functional.
WORKAROUND
After Membership is installed, create all users in the membership directory.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0.
