SYMPTOMS

A system will leak pageable memory when a large amount of mounts and dismounts are done on an NTFS partition.

CAUSE

The driver Ntfs.sys was not releasing memory acquired on a mount request on a dismount request. The memory leak is small, so the problem will usually show up after a period of days. Poolmon can be used to check this problem. Look for FSrtl tag taking up a lot of the pageable memory. Performance Monitor can also be used to monitor pageable memory use.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.
