SUMMARY

This article describes how to download Internet Explorer for a different operating system than you are currently running.

The installation files for Internet Explorer are specific to the operating system. Active Setup determines the version of the operating system running and then downloads the files appropriate for that operating system. For example, if a Windows 98-based computer downloads the installation files for Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1, the downloaded files are specific to Windows 98. Those files cannot be installed on a Windows NT 4.0-based computer. This article describes how network administrators can create an installation folder for Internet Explorer with the files necessary for installing on a different operating system.

NOTE: If you need more control over customizing and distributing Internet Explorer, then obtain the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK). For additional information about IEAK, please see the following Microsoft Web site:

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer 4

To download Internet Explorer 4 for a different operating system, follow these steps:

NOTE: Internet Explorer 4 is no longer available for download from Microsoft Web sites; however, this information is valid for other Web sites that offer Internet Explorer 4 downloads via Active Setup.

  1. If you have not already downloaded the IE4setup.exe file, locate the link to the file on the Web site, click the link, and then click Save This Program To Disk. Click the appropriate download location, and then click Save to save the file to your local drive.
  2. Click Start, click Run, and then type the following line

    <folder path>\ie4setup /c:"ie4wzd /d:1"

where <folder path> is the drive and folder containing the IE4setup file. This starts the Active Setup Wizard.
  3. Click the appropriate download option, and then click Next.

    Approximate disk space requirements
    ------------------------------------
    Browser-only installation 20989K
    Standard installation 24097K

  4. Click the appropriate Active Channel region, and then click Next.
  5. Type the path to the folder in which you want to save the installation files. The default folder is <drive>\Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup, where <drive> is the drive on which Windows is installed. Click Next.

NOTE: The path to the folder in which you want to save the Internet Explorer 4.0 installation files must be a local drive or a mapped network drive. For additional information about how to download the Internet Explorer 4.0 installation files to a mapped network drive, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  6. Click the region and download site closest to your location, and then click Next.
  7. After the files are downloaded, copy or move the IE4setup.exe file to the folder in which you downloaded the installation files.

NOTE: The IE4setup.exe file may not be copied to the installation file folder during the download.

The installation files for all supported operating systems are now contained in the installation folder you specified in Step 5.

NOTE: If you are running Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1, you cannot download Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1. As a result, you may receive the following message when you follow the above steps:
