Q174347

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

SUMMARY

This article describes how to remove and install the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions.

MORE INFORMATION

To install the FrontPage Server Extensions, use one of the methods described below. NOTE:You must be logged on to the Microsoft Windows NT Server as the Administrator of the server to remove or to install the FrontPage Server Extensions. Do not log on to the Windows NT Server as a user with Administrator permissions.

Method 1: Download Method

  1. Download the extensions file, click the Save file to disk option, and select C:\temp in which to install the file.
  2. Download the FrontPage Server Extensions from the following Microsoft World Wide Web site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/frontpagesupport

NOTE:Because the Microsoft Web site is constantly updated, the site address may change without notice. If this occurs, link to the Microsoft home page at the following address:

    http://www.microsoft.com/

  3. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer.
  4. Open the folder c:\temp where you saved the downloaded Server Extensions.
  5. Double-click the FP98ext_x86_enu.exe file.
  6. The Setup program will detect the server type installed. Verify that it is selected in the Installed Servers Detected dialog box. Click OK.
  7. Note the information in the Confirmation dialog box. Click OK.
  8. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Method 2: Compact Disc Installation (FrontPage 98)

The FrontPage Client is a separate, compact disc-based Setup that includes both the FrontPage Server Extensions and the FrontPage Client. To install only the Server Extensions from the compact disc, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the compact disc into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer.
  3. Select the FrontPage 98 compact disc, and open the ServExt folder.
  4. Double-click the Fp98ext_x86_enu.exe file.
  5. The Setup program will detect the server type installed. Verify that it is selected in the Installed Servers Detected dialog box. Click OK.
  6. Note the information in the Confirmation dialog box. Click OK.
  7. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Removal

To remove the FrontPage Server Extensions, follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs and click Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer.
  2. Open the \Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage folder in FrontPage 98.
  3. Double-click the FrontPage Server Administrator icon.
  4. In the Selected Port number box, click the port number you want to remove.

NOTE:In the box you should see two ports: 80 (the standard HTTP port) and 443 (the port used for SSL -- Secured Sockets Layer). If you have virtual servers, Internet Protocol Addresses (IPs) will appear in the Port number box followed by a colon and a port number. (for example, 157.45.35.27:80). Select the IP:port number.

  1. Click Uninstall.
  2. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to uninstall the Server Extensions, click OK.

Each FrontPage Client release is accompanied by a new Server Extensions release that supports the new features of the client. It is always most effective to use the most up-to-date versions of the FrontPage Client and the Server Extensions.

Each new release of the Server Extensions is backward compatible with previous FrontPage Client versions, so that it continues to support the client's functionality at each earlier level. For example, a FrontPage 97 Client can open and edit a FrontPage Web from a Web server that has the FrontPage 98 Server Extensions installed, with no loss of functionality in the FrontPage 97 Client. However, the FrontPage 97 Client will not be able to access new Server Extensions functionality added for the FrontPage 98 Client, such as applying themes to a FrontPage Web or creating and saving a FrontPage Web structure.
