If you have an open menu in a Microsoft Office 97 program, and you move the mouse pointer out of the program window and onto the desktop, you may receive the following error message:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module COMCTL32.DLL

This error message occurs only when the program is running in a window (is not maximized).

This error message can occur if you have Microsoft IntelliPoint version 2.0 installed, and if you have enabled the Focus option or the SmartSpeed option (or both options) on the StepSavers tab in the Mouse tool in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Mouse.
  3. Click to clear the Focus check box and the SmartSpeed check box.
  4. Close Control Panel.
  5. Restart your computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
