Troubleshooting Guide
=====================

This section provides troubleshooting information to get Attack of the
Mutant running at optimum game performance.

General Issues
--------------

Shut all other programs off

Disable all screen savers

Do not task-switch during gameplay (alt/tab). Although the game does
support task-switching.

Running in smaller screen sizes and lower detail will increase the
performance of both movies and gameplay. This applies to both Windows
95 and NT 4.0. To change screen size or resolution:

 - Press Esc during game play, this will bring up the option screen.
 - Click on settings
 - Click on a smaller screen size setting
 - Click on a smaller Detail setting

DirectX must be installed on your machine for the program to run.

Keyboard Issues
---------------

If you are using a Compaq Vocalyst keyboard, do not press multiple
keys at the same time because this causes key caching problems.

Sound issues
------------

Make sure the sound card was installed properly with the correct
switches and settings. Refer to your computer system manual or your
sound card manual for help.

Make sure the sound card doesn't conflict with other hardware by
using the Windows 95 Hardware Conflict Troubleshooter.

 - In Windows, click Start and then click 'Help'.
 - Double-click 'Troubleshooting'.
 - Double-click 'If you have a hardware conflict' and follow the
   directions on your screen.

Make sure the sound card is pressed securely into its slot.

If you are experiencing problems with sound volume or are not hearing
any sound, make sure that the volume control slider, accessible from
the taskbar, is at a reasonable level. Make sure your speakers are
turned on. Also, be sure that you do not have Music and Sound Volume
switched to off in the controls screen. If sound seems clipped, delayed
or warbling and you are operating with less than the recommended
requirements, a hardware upgrade will solve your sound issues.

Troubleshooting Specific Audio Cards: If you are using any of the
ollowing cards you may experience problems when playing Attack of
the Mutant. If you experience any of the following problems, please
contact your hardware manufacturer for their latest DirectX sound
card drivers:

 - Acer Magic S20
 - Aztech Waverider Pro 32-3D
 - Aztech Sound Galaxy Pro Extra
 - ATI Stereo FX
 - Diamond Multimedia SoundSonic LX
 - Ensoniq Soundscape
 - ESS 1788 PnP

 - Logitech SoundMan Wave
 - Media Magic ISP-16
 - MediaTrix AudioTrixPro
 - Media Vision ProAudio Spectrum Studio/SCSI
 - Orchid Sound Wave 32+ SCSI

 - Turtle Beach Monterey

Media Vision:

If you have a Media Vision Pro Audio 16 sound card and the sound is
scratchy, the Direct Memory Access (DMA) may be set too low. A DMA
setting of 7 will correct any scratchy sounds. For instructions on how
to change the DMA settings, refer to your sound card manual.

Video Issues
------------

Your computer MUST display at least 256 colors or higher. To display
256 colors in Windows 95:

 - Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control
   Panel.
 - Double-click the Display icon.
 - Click the Settings tab.
 - Under Color Palette, click 256 Color.
 - Click OK.

If you don't have the necessary 256-color driver, or if you aren't
sure that your video card supports 256 colors, contact your video
card manufacturer.

3-D Accelerated Video Cards:

If you have a 3-D accelerated video card and you receive an error
message saying that your display adapter is missing features when
you select Use Hardware Accelerator on the Graphics tab in the
Settings dialog box, you need to obtain the latest driver from your
hardware manufacturer.

SetDisplayMode Error: DDERR_GENERIC:

If you receive this error you probably have a video card that doesn't
fully support on the fly mode switching. To fix, set your resolution to
256 color and restart.

If you are experiencing problems, you may have a conflict with the Win
95 Accelerator feature. To turn off or lower the Win 95 accelerator:

 - Right click My Computer
 - Click Properties
 - Click the performance tab
 - Click Graphics
 - Turn down the graphics accelerator slider
