SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to run Microsoft Publisher, you may receive this error message:

The file C:\Windows\System\THREED.VBX is out of date. This program requires a newer version.

CAUSE

This error message appears when either of the following is true:

  • An older version of Threed.vbx is on the hard disk and may still be in memory.

- or -

  • The Threed.vbx file may be damaged.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, search the hard disk for all copies of Threed.vbx. The correct Threed.vbx, which is installed by Publisher 97, should be located in the \Windows\System folder and it should have a modified date of August 6, 1996 or later. The Threed.vbx file that ships with Publisher 97 has the following additional specifications:

File Size: 64,432 bytes
File Version: 3.0.1.0
Product Version: 3.0.0.0

If you find a copy of Threed.vbx in the \Windows folder, rename it. If the Threed.vbx file in the \Windows\System folder does not have the correct size and/or date, copy this file from the root folder of the Publisher 97 compact disc.

MORE INFORMATION

Publisher uses the Threed.vbx file to display three-dimensional controls. Other programs also use this file, so this problem may occur after you install additional software on your computer.
