Article ID: 172727

Article Last Modified on 1/20/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Project 2000 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Project 98 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q172727

SYMPTOMS

When you save a project that contains Unicode characters in any of the following formats, the Unicode characters will not be saved correctly:

Comma separated variable (.csv)
Text only (.txt)
HyperText Markup Language (.htm)

In addition, when you look at a preview of the file in the File Open dialog box, Unicode characters appear as question marks.

NOTE: To see a preview of a file, click Open on the File menu, select the file you want, and then click Preview.

CAUSE

The file formats listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article do not support Unicode characters. Each of these file formats is based on the ANSI character set, which is an 8-bit character set. The Unicode character set is a 16-bit character set that cannot be represented by the ANSI standard. When you save a file that contains Unicode characters in one of the formats described in the "Symptoms" section, some characters will be mapped to ANSI characters, which are then saved in the file. A similar process occurs when Microsoft Project saves the preview data for a file.
