SYMPTOMS

When you click a hyperlink in Word to open the link in Internet Explorer and then click the Back button to switch back to Word, nothing happens and Internet Explorer remains active.

CAUSE

This is a timing issue: This problem occurs when you start Internet Explorer 3.x from Word, and Internet Explorer finishes starting before Word can establish a connection to it.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, upgrade to Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
