SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft Outlook 97, you may get the following error message:
CAUSE
The Outlook Address Book (OAB) is corrupted.
RESOLUTION
The resolution is a three step process.
- Remove the OAB service from your profile.
- Rename and replace the Contab32.dll file.
- Add the OAB service to your profile.

Remove the OAB Service from Your Profile
- On the Tools menu, click Services.
- Click the Outlook Address Book service, then click Remove.
- Click Yes to the prompt to remove the service.
- Click OK to close the Services dialog box.
- Exit and Log Off Outlook.
Rename and Replace the Contab32.dll File
- In Windows Explorer, locate the Contab32.dll file (usually found in the Windows\System directory).
- Right-click Contab32.dll and on the shortcut menu click Rename.
- Type a new name for the Contab32.dll, such as Contab32.dlx.
- Copy a new Contab32.dll file from the \System folder of your Office CD.
- Right-click the new Contab32.dll file in your hard drive's System folder and from the context-sensitive menu, click properties.
- Click to uncheck the Read-only attribute and click OK.
Add the OAB Service to Your Profile
- Start Outlook.
- On the Tools menu, click Services.
- Click Add, click Outlook Address Book, and click OK to close all dialog boxes.
- Exit and Log Off Outlook.
- Restart Outlook.
NOTE: It may be necessary to re-register Outlook before you can add the OAB service to your profile.
To Re-register the Office Programs
- Close any running Office programs, including the Office Shortcut Bar.
- Insert the Office 97 (or Outlook 97) compact disc in the drive.
- Click the Start button and Click Run.
- Type <CD drive letter>:\Setup.exe /y and click OK.
- When the Microsoft Office 97 Setup starts, click Reinstall.
