Microsoft Commercial Internet Systems (MCIS) Membership Server only supports DPA Authentication for Internet Explorer version 3.02 and Netscape 3.x for Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. Other browsers and operating systems, including UNIX, Macintosh, and others, are unable to use Membership Systems for authentication.

Microsoft Commercial Internet System, version 1.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2) offers the option of using clear text authentication for Mail, News, and Web services. This allows other third-party browsers and operating systems to use Membership Systems.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0.
