This article was previously published under Q170043

SYMPTOMS

If you have Microsoft Windows 95 clients that take 1 to 30 minutes to connect to any web sites through the Proxy Server, the problem may be that you have a DNS server IP address configured on the Windows 95 client, TCP/IP configuration settings.

CAUSE

If you are connecting to the Internet through the Microsoft Proxy Server then the Network Card on the server that is connected to the Internet should be configured with the following entries/IP addresses:

  • The DNS server addresses that will be used for Domain Name Look ups.
  • The Default Gateway address that will be used to route the request to the router.

The client computers should not be configured with a DNS Server address. They should use the one configured on the Proxy Server.

WORKAROUND

Remove the IP address of the DNS server entry on the Windows 95 client computers to fix the above problem.

Once this is done the client computers will connect to the Internet via the Proxy Server almost instantaneously.
