SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 7.x for Windows 95, when you open a Microsoft Word 97 document containing ListNum fields, those fields will be removed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you use the Word 97 Import Converter, Mswrd832.cnv, to open the file. ListNum fields do not have an equivalent field in earlier versions of Word and are removed during conversion.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of the Word 97-2000 Import Converter. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with certain versions of the Word 97 Import Converter.

This problem is corrected in the version of the converter available with Microsoft Office 97 SR-2.

MORE INFORMATION

This fix involves a design change in the converter that allows ListNum fields to remain in a Word 97 file when opened in Word 7.x with the Word 97 Import Converter. The ListNum field is retained to allow for round-trip conversions back to Word 97 for Windows.

With the fix applied, when the file is opened in Word 97, the ListNum files will appear correctly; when the file is opened in Word 7.x, the following error will appear because there is no equivalent field in Word 7.x:

Error! Bookmark Not Defined
